The “Taboo” Purpose

While Likewise: The High School Comic Chronicles of Ariel Schrag was not the most relatable thing to my high school experience on the surface, I can say that I felt just as lost and emotional as she did. While reading this, I felt a mixture of confusion, and annoyance, but I soon realized that the purpose of this book was not to entertain as much as it was to relate- to extend the torch, to be a friend. It was the breaking of a taboo experience with drugs, sex, and love. It allowed conversations to start between people.

  1. Ariel Schrag shows her ability to speak on certain topics that would be considered taboo for other authors. She speaks openly and doesn’t mince words when she speaks on her experiences and this is an empowering method not only for her but also for the reader to give them the self-confidence they need to overcome their own issues. This is an interview where Ariels speaks about writing on such subjects.
